Jacques Henri Lartigue (1894-1986), started to take photos at the age of six. It was not until he was 70 that the art world recognized him as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. Lartigue was from a family of the high bourgeoisie, and his father was a successful banker. His family was passionately involved in the adventures and inventions of the era such as the automobile and the airplane, which represented that period's modern spirit and deeply influenced Lartigue. Fame and wealth were never his life pursuits, just his lifestyle. He said: “Freedom is more important than money.” Later, Lartigue donated all his negatives, albums, cameras and personal diaries to the French State, and from these photos and texts, we discover the story of an extraordinary and elegant life. Not only does it narrate nearly a century in the evolution of French life, but also an ideal French dream: Lartigue made his 92 years life into a work of romantic art.
